Altrusa International Inc of Te Awamutu Inc

The Altrusa Club of Te Awamutu Inc was chartered in December 1994 and currently has 54 members. Members represent a diverse range of careers and ages. Over the years the club has raised and distributed over $130,000 through a number of community projects.   Altrusa Te Awamutu is a registered charity CC10620.

What is Altrusa?

Altrusa is a group of women who get together to have fun, make new friends, learn new things and who work together to make their community a better place to live in. There are 22 clubs in New Zealand and over 400 worldwide.

When do we meet?

The club meets once a month on the 1st Monday of the month. We have our business meeting, dinner and a guest speaker all on the one evening. Committees meet to work on projects outside of this monthly meeting.

What do we do?

Our club's aim is to make a difference in our community. While the main theme of Altrusa is improving literacy world wide our club also undertakes many other community projects. Some of the projects we have done over the past 10 years include:

* Funding the Altrusa Family Meeting room at the new Waikato Hospice

* Providing Resource Packs and books for Rainbow Place (Children's Hospice)

* Easter Tea Dance for Senior Citizens

* R.E.A.D literacy project aimed at improving literacy through the provision of resources, enthusing children about reading, recognising children's acheivements and developing partnerships with other organisations to improve literacy.

*  Altrusa Book Awards (for children working hard on improving their literacy skills).

*TLC (Tender loving care) weekend for carers looking after seriously ill family members at home.

* Al and Trusa and team raising funds for the Cancer Society through the Relay for Life

* Positive Ripples project which involves the ongoing support of a Hagar home in Cambodia for young girls rescued from the sex industry.

 

* Providing books for pre-schools, schools, the local library and homes for the elderly.

 

* Leadership Training courses for Intermediate and College Students
