Who Were Howell and Mitchell
These movements according to the Encyclopaedia of bridge were invented by the following
John T Mitchell, known as the "Father of Duplicate Whist" and author of the first book on the subject (Duplicate Whist 1892). He invented many schedules for individual, pair and team contests, notably the Mitchell Movement. He helped to adapt matchpoint scoring, used whist for the purposes of duplicate auction and was a director of the American Whist League.
Edwin C Howell was professor of mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). He was born in 1860 and credited with the invention of the Howell Movement in 1897.
