1932 FORDSON V8 FIRE APPLIANCE....

Built in England in 1932, shipped to New Zealand and was first registered in New Zealand in 1934, affectionately known as “Gertie” the Te Awamutu Fire Board purchased her for 720 pounds and 9 shillings, she was commissioned on 28th March 1934.1932 V8 Fordson Fire Appliance

She saw service as an operational pump in Te Awamutu until 1981 when she was replaces by a 1980 V8 Diesel Dodge.  This saw the demise of “Gertie”.

The Brigades Social Club approached the commission in an effort to save Gertie from being auctioned.  They purchased Gertie for $10.00 this being the cost of change of ownership.

Over the next four years, except for the running gear, almost every nut and bolt was removed, all the chrome and paintwork was reconditioned, and all the brass was re-polished.

With the assistance of local businesses, the expertise of various tradesman and the dedication of the brigade, Gertie was restored to her former glory.

In 1986 the Te Awamutu Borough Council erected a special building to house our historic Fire Engine along with various other historical Fire Fighting equipment, which is now on public display.

Gertie is available for display at fairs, galas, parades and weddings around the country by request.  If you would like to find out about using Gertie for your event, please write to the Brigade at 14 Palmer Street, Te Awamutu.  Please include the event, date and time she would be required and a contact phone number.
