Phase 2 National Championship Regatta

4th and 5th April 2009

A proud day for Arthur Ferguson (helm) and crew Claire Gardiner as they took first place in both the Masters and Open 2009 Phase 2 Championship Regatta sailed at Lake Ngaroto on the 4th and 5th of April 2009. Ferguson and Gardiner demonstrated superior and consistent sailing skills in the light conditions that prevailed over the weekend. Picking the wind direction that changed greatly, the strength of which rarely touched 5 knots along with very smooth movements enabled the pairing to maintain some degree of momentum around the courses during the five races that were sailed. Runners up in the Open class and also the first placed Youth were the pairing of Micah (helm) and Alex (crew) Wilkinson. Their placings included a first and two thirds to finish one point ahead of Adrian France and Evan Teao (Hamilton).

Other NSC pairings were Thomas de Meijer/Shaun Rumbles (5th), Hamish and Nicola McPherson (7th), Jon Hurst/Danny Padman (8th), Kieran McKay/Linda Civil (10th), Blake and Jaeden Buxton/Matt Ward (13th) and Ann Byford/Nadene Byford-Hollows (14th) in the fleet of 16 boats.
Boats came from Auckland, Rotorua and right down to Wellington. Kim Ardmore a National Race Officer from Yachting NZ in Auckland conducted the race management to make the most of the light conditions and complete the national class regatta.
Members of the Ngaroto Sailing Club through their enterprise certainly made the atmosphere and catering over the course of the weekend one that the sailors and their supporters will remember well for quite some time. Thanks to all who pitched in!
