Race
Series
- Three race series are, named after local districts,
Paterangi, Pokeru and Mangaiko are competed for during
the summer sailing season. Each district series are
sailed over two to four Sundays with 2 or 3 races being
sailed each day. A yacht’s worst one or two scores
may be dropped at the completion of the series, the
number of drops is described in the Club Calendar (and
may vary depending on series length). Race
durations are often about 40 to 50 minutes.
- The Club Championship series is sailed over 6 to 8
races each lasting about an hour. Mixed fleets have their
race times adjusted by NZTYA or Weymouth handicaps
(published on the NZTYA and Yachting NZ web sites).
The application of handicaps allows the best sailors in a
mix fleet to be fairly determined.
- A Mark Foy series, where the slowest yacht/sailors
are set off earlier than those faster yachts/sailors, is
a great fun series (like a reverse grid car race).
The starting time differentials are decided by the OD(s)
and may be altered throughout the series. Places
are determined by the finish line positions.
- A Sprint Race series, often run in the New Year, is a
series of very short races, each of just 10 or 15 minutes
duration. Five or more races may be run each day
somewhat dependent on the wind conditions.
- A Six Hour Race has regained popularity with Trailer
Yachts, senior and youth centreboard sailors over recent
years. Sail solo or as a team (crew can be
rotated). The laps of the lake are counted then
adjusted by the yachts handicap to determine the
corrected number of laps and hence the winner.
- Trophies or Plates are presented to the winners of
most series at the AGM and prize giving dinner held in
June each year.
- The John Dixon Memorial Trailer Yacht Winter series
is sailed over three alternate Sundays starting in
July.
- Several regattas are held each year. The Annual
Ngaroto Trailer Yacht Regatta and Joker Ass. Championships are held in the last weekend
of September, a round of the Paper Tiger Ass North Island Freshwater Lakes Series is
sailed on a weekend in November (the cats coming from
throughout the North Island).
