“Green” Fleet
sailing
Junior sailing has greatly increased over recent years at
Lake Ngaroto. The Ngaroto Sailing Club and the
Waikato Thames Yachting Association are keen to continue
encourage the continued development. Improved club
resources, keen young sailors and parent help are all vital
for the continuation of sailor development.
In the 2006/07 sailing season the Association co-ordinated
“Green” fleets within the existing club regatta program.
What is the “Green” fleet? “Green” fleet sailors are
those juniors that are new to sailing, say in their first
or two seasons. They typically sail Optimists, Fire
Bugs or “P” class yachts and have received some coaching
through “Learn to Sail” courses and now want to gain a
little more experience. On the water coaching is
allowed to help the budding sailors complete the
course. Clubs typically dedicate a club patrol boat
to do this.
