Hazards at Lake Ngaroto
The Ngaroto Sailing Club will do everything reasonable practicable to ensure the safety of participants and spectators at yachting events. All participants and spectators should note the hazards listed below. Sailing is a safe sport but due care must be taken minimise the risk of an accident
Sailing at Lake Ngaroto is at the participant’s own risk both on and off the water.
On land, significant hazards include:
- Slippery Ramp;
- Uneveness of jetty timbers;
On water, significant hazards include:
- Collision of boats during a race may cause injury;
- Collision of boat with submerged object and
- Mechanical breakdowns / Equipment failure.
At certain times of year, algae levels at Lake Ngaroto may present a risk.
Symptoms include: skin infections/sores are slow to heal. To minimise the risk from toxic algae:
- Remove wet clothing
- Wash, shower after contact with the water
- Avoid prolonged contact with the lake water
- Young and older people may be at greater risk
Spectator Responsibilities
Supervise children at all times.
Boat Skipper
Every boat skipper must:
- Ensure life jackets are available for everyone on board;
- Operate the boat responsibly and,
- Ensure everyone on board knows what safety equipment is carried, where it is stowed and how it works.
- Maintain the boat, its motor, the electrics and all safety equipment.
- The skipper is responsible for the safety of the boat and everyone on board.
Medical Emergency
In the advent of a medical emergency the Officer of the Day will be responsible for the course of action to be taken.
A First Aid Kit is available in the club house.

All race communications will be on the VHF Channel 77
Telephone communications is by personal cell phone only.
