7yrs of age under Jung Nam Lee

 

What ITF club did you first join and who was your Instructor?

Sunshine Coast ran by Rocky and Trish Rounthwaite 2000

 

When did you become a 1st Dan?

24th of April 2001 in Buderim (Australia)

 

You are now Instructor of the Gisborne Club – did you set this club up?  How long has it been running?

I set the club up in 2002

 

Have you been an Instructor at some other Club before Gisborne?

 

 

What are some of your greatest achievements in Taekwon Do?

 

Ø                  Achieving my 1st Dan in Australia with my father there watching

Ø                  Making the 2003 NZ team to Poland

Ø                  The success of the Gisborne club, and the characters that come with it

Ø                  Being part of the Midlands region what a great bunch of people 

 

What has been the highlight of your Taekwon Do Career to date?

 

Ø                  Club of the year 2005

Ø                  Meeting rocky and Trish Rounthwaite

Ø                  Winning the Queensland and Australian Bai Rui 2001 champs (heavy weight sparring)

Ø                  Meeting my wife

Ø                  Hosting the 2005 Midlands Regional’s

Ø                  2nd Dan grading with Mr. Bhana & Mr. Patterson

 

 

 

Have there been any major disappointments in your Taekwon Do career? If so, what?

Not really

 

Do you have any personal Taekwon Do goals for the future?  If so, what are they ?

To have a front line full of black belts.

 

How do you think Taekwon Do in New Zealand is developing in comparison to other countries? (or styles)

We are up there with the top countries in the world and I know this from fist hand experience, we are very fortunate to have the likes of Masters McPhail & Master Davidson there knowledge of the art and there skill is second to none

 

Which practising Taekwon Do Instructor(s) do you admire the most and why?

That’s a tough one.………

 

Ø                  James Rimmer every movement cracks like a stockwhip

Ø                  Lawrence Mantjika just magic to watch

Ø                  Graham Patterson sheer freak and as humble as they come

 

Do you have a favourite technique?

Reverse hook kick

 

What is the highest level any of your students have achieved?

 1st gup so far

 

Do you have any comments on what you think are the most likely attributes a student needs to progress through the ranks to 1st Dan and higher ?

Just keep enjoying what you are doing and don’t be afraid to set yourself goals.
